Editorials and commentary by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Mark Mahoney.


Mark Mahoney, the Editorial Page Editor of the Glens Falls Post-Star, and 2009 winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Writing, is creating an unusual book of writings on writing.  Starting with a selection of his prize winning pieces for the Post-Star, Mark will wrap his commentaries with commentaries on the writing process:  what he was thinking at the time, why the piece was written, what it was intended to achieve, and reflections on how it work, in addition to thoughts on the state of modern journalism and the news and writing life.


Mark has also had a long and abiding interest on freedom of information, transparency of governmental meetings and access to public information. 


This book will be a must-read for anyone interested in writing,  journalism and the news business, journalism students, and the free flow of information and access to meetings that are fundamental to our democracy.


About Mark Mahoney



Mark Mahoney is the Editorial Page Editor at The Post-Star newspaper in Glens Falls, NY. In addition to writing all of the newspaper's local editorials and political endorsements, Mahoney organizes and oversees meetings of the newspaper's editorial board and authors a nationally recognized blog about First Amendment issues called, “Your Right to Know.”

    

Mahoney has won more than 30 national and state awards for editorial writing and reporting, including the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Writing, The American Society of Newspaper Editors Award in 2004, National Headliners Awards in 2006 and 2009, the Associated Press Managing Editors First Amendment Award in 2008 and the Lee Enterprises President’s Award in 2003. Most recently, he was honored by the New York News Publishers’ Association with its 2010 award for Distinguished Editorial Writing, and honored with a 2010 National Headliners Award for Editorial Writing.


He started his newspaper career at The Post-Star in 1988 as a night general assignment reporter. Prior to working at The Post-Star, Mahoney was a legislative correspondent for Statewide News Service at the state capitol in Albany. Upon graduating from college, he worked as a news reporter and on-air announcer at WEOK/WPDH in Poughkeepsie, NY.


He has written numerous columns on fatherhood, and has published several freelance news articles. He also writes a regular column, “On Deadline,” for the American Society of Newspaper Editor’s quarterly magazine, “American Editor.”


Mahoney is a 1985 graduate of Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY, with a bachelor of science degree in communications management, and a 1983 graduate of Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, NY, with an associate’s of science degree in Communications and Media Arts. He is currently enrolled at Empire State College, where he is pursuing his master's degree in liberal studies.


A native of Poughkeepsie, NY, he graduated Highland High School in Highland, NY, in 1981.


Mahoney is a board member of the National Conference of Editorial Writers and is chairman of the NCEW Education Committee.


In his spare time, he enjoys rollerblading, reading mystery novels, writing (for fun) and spending time with his three daughters, Christa, Chelsea and Caitlin, his fiance Lisa Sax and her sons, and his extended family.


He is an avid Mets, Jets and Rangers fan.
